About the author

Konstantin Kakaes is the senior editor in charge of mathematics coverage at Quanta Magazine. He joined Quanta in 2022 after previous stops at Politico, MIT Technology Review and The Economist. He was the 2019 Science Communicator in Residence at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at the University of California, Berkeley, and a 2009-10 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also the author of The Pioneer Detectives (2013), an e-book about space exploration and failure in scientific discovery. He has a degree in physics from Harvard University.
